Search topics posts Tai Chi

The TaiChi search mode is in alpha phase, it's an opensource system similar to the engine of google (it works with rankings and such) and is used by the largest websites at this moment.

In the initial tests it shows that the searches are 1000% faster than the current search. Searching for only topic titles takes 20 seconds or so with the current system (but parsing the results takes some time, making it 30 seconds or so before you see the result).

The new engines needs 0.002 seconds for the same term (but parsing the results takes some time, making it 10 seconds or so before you see the result)

There will be two new functions first:

  • Search on title AND first post (better than the current search on titles only)
  • Search complete posts.

The search bar at the board index (the main page of AF's forum) already incorporated that search. If you type anything in there, you will be searching with the new search engine.

If you want to go to the search engine directly use this address: http://search.asianfanatics.net/search

Wants to compare with the old search engine? Use this address: http://asianfanatics.net/forum/index.php?act=Search&f=

note: the search engine reindex once a day. Around 3PM GMT. This usually takes half an hour, and you won't notice much difference.

Some pointers:

What you can search:

  • Currently it only searches on topic-title AND the 1st post (that's why I made the rule that 1st post must be very good)
  • It has only indexed the main forums (so crewsection, downloadsection and trashcan are not indexed)
  • It search only OPEN topics and PINNED topics. CLosed topics will not be searched. (might add that later, but not needed in this phase)

How you can search:

Remember, the new search works the same way as google. it searches for the best match on terms.

So you can use syntaxes like this:

-Bernice Liu (it will search for both words)
-Bernice +Liu (both words have to exist in the post/title, same as the radio-option search for all words)
-Bernice -Liu (only bernice will be searched, but results with Liu in it will be removed from the search results)
-"Bernice Liu" (the EXACT phrase must be shown in the same order. So "Bernice Liu" will be found, but "Liu Bernice" not)

There is a very advanced feature in the search engine, named stemming. Meaning, it will look for alternatives of a word and see if they match your search.

So if you search for Burning Flames You will be getting "Burned Flamers" too. Or Burn Flame.

If you want to filter on forum or topicstarter you have to use this syntax:

forum:FORUMID AND SEARCHTERM

So if you want to search for "smallville" and only in forum non-asian entertainment (forumid 151) you do this

forum:151 AND smallville

If you want to search for topics by "starizblue" you do author:"starizblue"

You can also just search for the title with title:SEARCHTERM

At the main forum page, you can see at the Google ads place the quick search bar.
